FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Nigerian Ambassador Lifts Falconets, Urges Focus On China Match

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Her Excellency Mrs Chioma Ohakim Esq, has moved to lift the spirits of the Falconets following their 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

Rather than allow the disappointing result to dampen the team’s morale, Ambassador Ohakim watched the encounter at Stadion Sosnowiec alongside officials of the Nigerian mission and offered her support to the players and technical crew.

After the final whistle, the ambassador interacted with the Falconets, encouraging them to put the defeat behind them and focus on their crucial second group match against China.

Ohakim reminded the players that they had shown glimpses of good football against Spain and urged them to retain their confidence as they seek to revive their campaign.

In a gesture that further endeared her to the team, the diplomat also brought Nigerian food for the players, providing them with a welcome taste of home while competing thousands of kilometres away from Nigeria.

Her presence and words of encouragement have provided a timely morale boost for the Falconets, who return to Stadion Sosnowiec on Thursday evening to face a highly motivated China side.

The two-time runners-up face a difficult challenge against the Chinese, who opened their campaign with an emphatic 5-0 victory over New Caledonia. The result placed China top of Group F, ahead of 2022 champions Spain on goal difference.

Nigeria will be seeking to secure their first points of the tournament and keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

The Falconets and China have previously met twice at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals, with each encounter producing a memorable outcome.

Their first meeting came at the 2006 tournament in Russia, the edition in which the competition was renamed the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after the first two editions were staged as U19 tournaments. China defeated Nigeria 3-0 in a group-stage encounter at the Podmoskovie Stadium.

Twelve years later, the teams met again at the 2018 tournament in France. Nigeria secured a 1-1 draw in Dinan-Léhon after a late own goal by a Chinese defender, a result that helped the Falconets progress to the quarter-finals.

Coach Moses Aduku said the team had already moved on from the defeat to Spain and was fully focused on Thursday’s encounter.

“We have put the match against Spain behind us and are focusing totally on the clash with China. The players are ready to come out stronger for the match against China,” Aduku said on Wednesday night.

With China high on confidence following their opening-day rout of New Caledonia, Nigeria will need a strong response to keep their hopes of progressing from Group F firmly on course.
