The House of Representatives has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to find political and diplomatic means of addressing the issue of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu to curtail insecurity in the South East region.

The House also urged the President Tinubu-led administration to consult with political, traditional and religious leaders in Ebonyi State and other South East states to find a lasting solution to the insecurity in the region.

But the House declined to take a resolution calling for the release of Kanu from detention to allow the Green Chamber to consult relevant stakeholders on the right legal step to take.

The Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas said the Leadership of the House, comprising the Majority and Minority groups will meet with relevant stakeholders to seek their view before taking a position.

This was an amendment to a motion on the need to forestall further killings in Ebonyi and the rising insecurity in the state and the South/East, indicating that  the solution to the security challenges in the zone was the release of Kanu from detention.

While putting the motion to voice vote, the Speaker said he could not ascertain the actual voting pattern and therefore deferred taking a decision on the amendment.

In his intervention, the Chief Whip, Usman Bello Kumo warned against taking a position that was against the rules of the House not to comment on matters that are before courts.

Raising a point of order, Deputy House Leader, Abdullahii Ali said the issue of Kanu was subjudiced as it was a matter before the courts of the land.

On his part, the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kanu said even though the case is before the court, the President can seek a political solution to the case, saying “those of us from the South-East knows where it pinches.”
