The director-general of the National Institute of Democratic and Legislative Studies (NILDS), Prof Abubakar Sulaiman, has been honoured with the impact and innovation award by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), the UK public body dedicated to strengthening democracy around the world.

In a statement issued by the information and communication assistant to the DG, Joke Akinsanmi, he said the recognition was contained in a letter signed by the WFD regional director, Africa, Michael Nevin.

It acknowledged Sulaiman’s exceptional development-driven initiatives at NILDS.

“It is truly an honour to receive such commendation and be acknowledged for the remarkable efforts and dedication demonstrated by the DG, management and staff of the institute,” he said.

He said that Sulaiman embarked on this journey with a clear vision of creating meaningful change in the country, and that it is truly incredible to witness these efforts being recognised on a global scale, adding that the recognition from the esteemed WFD, who is their partner for the past three years, served as a testament to the power of passionate individuals uniting to drive sustainable development.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the WFD for bestowing this honour upon us. Their acknowledgement reaffirms our belief in the importance of supporting democratic processes and institutions in Nigeria and worldwide, while concurrently strengthening democracy, promoting good governance, and facilitating democratic reforms.

“I would also like to express my deepest appreciation to everyone who has been part of this journey – the leadership of the National Assembly, NILDS’ management, and staff. Your support and collective effort have played a vital role in our success,” Sulaiman stated.
