A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has commended the European Union (EU) over its Observation Mission report on the conduct of the 2023 general election in Rivers State.

The report, which was released last week had alleged threats, violent attacks, intimidation, denials and other restrictive measures were meted-out on  electorates, opposition parties and their candidates, in the build-up to the election.

Eze, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday, alleged that former Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, deployed executive powers to trample on the rights of opposition political parties, their candidates and supporters, in order to sway outcome of the election in his favour.

He further alleged that fully aided by men of the Nigerian Police Force and some unrestrained gun-wielding non-State actors recruited to coarse voters and crush unyielding members of opposing camps who manifested slightest sign of resistance to their assignment.

The APC chieftain said: “Former Governor Nyesom Wike was not alone in his vengeful acts and personal vendetta against democracy and rule of law; but was fully aided by men of the Nigerian Police Force and some unrestrained gun-wielding non-state actors recruited to coarse voters and crush unyielding members of opposing camps who manifested slightest sign of resistance to their assignment.”

“We recall how late Chisom Lenard, an APC campaign coordinator for Ahoada East local government area and several others within the Ahoada area and other parts of the state, lost their lives on election day in defense of democracy.

“Political thugs, who were moving round polling units and carting away electoral materials for the PDP and their candidates rained bullets on the APC faithful who had attempted to resist their mission.

“It is unfortunate to learn that while those blood thirsty mortals who had perpetrated the evil walk freely on the streets, their principals move around with security escorts because the hands of the law seem too short to bring them to justice.”
