Senator Abdulazeez Yari has defended the ongoing screening process of ministerial nominees, emphasising the significance of the long-standing tradition known as “Take a Bow.”

The traditional “Take a Bow and Go” approach has come under scrutiny, drawing criticism from various quarters.

The method allows former lawmakers and  prominent figures with extensive service records to bypass detailed questioning during the confirmation process, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.

Speaking to State House correspondents yesterday after meeting with the vice president, Kassim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Yari asserted that it serves to honour distinguished individuals who have dedicated their lives to the nation’s service.

He emphasized that the practice is reserved for those with a notable track record or significant contributions to the country, a testament to their commitment and expertise.

Yari clarified that the Senate, when necessary, conducts thorough interrogations to ensure that the best possible candidates are appointed.

He said questions are tailored to the nominees’ areas of expertise, covering crucial subjects like water resources, finance, education, and health.

He said, “Yes, taking a bow and go is a tradition. Anybody you would have seen, ‘take a bow and go’, is one of the prominent ones that served Nigeria for a long time or his track record is known to every Nigerian.

“And the National Assembly has a tradition, if you served as a senator or an Honourable member, it’s an honour to read your CV and maybe explain yourself which they all have the record to ask you to take a bow and go.

“But where we need to do a thorough interrogation for Nigerians, we used to do it, and you can see. Whatever we do as leaders, share as leaders, but people will look as if we are not doing it.

“Leaders don’t do enough but he will do his best. So we are doing our best to ensure that we thoroughly interrogate the nominees and decide the fates of Nigerians.

“Just as what the president said yesterday, we are also saying the same thing that Nigerians should bear with us. We are there for them on their behalf and we are going to do our best. All we need from them is to be patient.”

Responding to concerns about the nominees presented by President Bola Tinubu, Senator Yari expressed confidence in the president’s selection process.

He assured the nation that the Senate is diligently scrutinizing each nominee’s qualifications, competence, and suitability for their respective portfolios.

Senator Yari urged Nigerians to remain patient and trust the National Assembly’s commitment to serving the nation’s best interests.

He highlighted the importance of experience and dedication in office, encouraging the nominees to prioritize the welfare of the Nigerian people and seek support from their friends and family through prayers.
