The Africa Social Impact Summit 2023, event co-organized by the Sterling One Foundation and the United Nations Nigeria, has brought together a diverse array of stakeholders to deliberate and assess the progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) midway through their timeline.
The summit, holding at EKO Convention Centre in Lagos, has the participation of esteemed individuals, representatives, and thought leaders who are dedicated to driving positive change across the African continent.
The opening day of the summit was marked by a series of illuminating keynote speeches delivered by influential figures. Notable among them were Amina J Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; the honorable Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Executive Governor of Lagos State (represented by the deputy governor); Abubakar Suleiman, MD/CEO of Sterling Bank; Matthias Schmale, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator – Nigeria, United Nations; Will Stevens, Consulate General, U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, Lagos; Jette Bjerrum, Danish Consulate General; and Lucy Person, Director Nigeria, British Council. These speakers brought forth their insights, expertise, and commitments to shaping a sustainable and impactful future for Africa.
A highlight of the summit was the robust discussions on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors. Panels featuring experts such as Marilyn Obaisa Osula, Tinuade Awe, and Dr. Ndidi Nnoli-Edozien delved into the critical importance of these factors in driving sustainable development across various sectors. These discussions shed light on practical strategies, challenges, and opportunities in achieving the SDGs.
The summit’s Deal Room, powered by the UNIDO ITPO team under the leadership of Abimbola Olufore Wycleff, provided a platform for actionable collaborations. Impact investors, including Mr. Prince Ogbonna of Moolu Venture Capital and Moolu Impact Foundation with other teeming impact investors played an active role in participating in the deal room and encouraging impact innovators as they pitched their solutions. It was gathering that engaged with transformational ideas and evidence-based insights stemming from their work across the African continent. This dynamic environment facilitated meaningful connections among passionate leaders, fostering a community dedicated to driving real change in Africa.
