“I will speak to you later. We are moving round to monitor compliance”, Nwosu explained when contacted on his mobile phone.

But virtually all commercial bank branches in the state were closed for business while civil servants went to work.

However, most schools including public and private schools did not close.

Heavy downpour in the morning prevented residents from moving till at about 11.05am.

Although schools are still on holiday, registeration of students ahead of schools’ resumption for new academic session was on going at schools visited in Awka, the Anambra state capital by this reporter to monitor compliance with the nationwide warning strike declared by the NLC to protest the federal government failure to implement the agreement which the organised labour reached with it to mitigate the harsh economic effects of the removal of oil subsidy and other sundry demands.

A student of Girls Secondary School, Amaenyi-Awka, Amarachi Nwabueze told LEADERSHIP at the school that staff members of the school were registering students ahead of the re-opening of schools. And that she was registered too.

Meanwhile, the gate of the school was wide open when LEADERSHIP visited, and, many staff members and students were milling around within the school premises.

Also, the gate of the Anambra state secretariat complex, otherwise, known as Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex was wide open and several civil servants were going in and coming out.

A staff member of the secretariat who simply gave his name as Mr. David and who said that he is attached to the Head of Service (HoS) office said “we didn’t receive any directive not to come to work. So, that is why I came to work”.

A security personnel attached to one of the commercial banks in Awka told LEADERSHIP “we did not open because there strike today”.
