Experts Emphasise Renewable Utilisation In Nigeria’s Energy Landscape

Experts in renewable energy pledged supports for massive transformation of the sub-sector as an integral component of Nigeria’s energy landscape.

They stated this at the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) Renewable Energy event with theme: ‘Renewable Energy: Innovation, Transition, Opportunities, and Challenges’ held in Lagos.

Managing director, Shell Nigeria Gas, Mr. Ralph Gbobo said the theme of the event underscored the transformative journey that the energy sector was undergoing globally.

Gbobo emphasised the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources to address the challenges posed by climate change and to create sustainable energy systems for the future.

According to him, there is the need to create a more sustainable future which include the exploration, development and utilisation of renewable energy sources.

“This had become essential components of Nigeria’s energy landscape. In pursuit of a more sustainable future, innovation play a vital role in transforming how we produce energy.

“Collaborating with the private sector, government agencies and academia is essential to overcome the challenges we face in transition to renewable energy,” he pointed out.

The managing director said gas remains transition fuel as the country moves towards the renewable era.

He, however said, Nigeria must recognise also the obstacles ahead on the country’s journey to renewable energy future, saying, “recognising the importance of gas enables us to strategically plan and implement solutions that align with our commitment to a sustainable future.”

President, NBCC, Mr. Ray Atelly said, the focus on renewable energy had taken center stage like never before.

Atelly said the event’s theme resonated deeply with the current global context whereby the transition towards renewable energy sources was no longer a choice but a necessity.

“As we confront environmental challenges and endeavour to meet the energy needs of a growing population, this transition opens up a world of possibilities.

“Our discussions throughout the day will delve into the intricacies of innovation, the dynamics of transition, the array of opportunities, and the challenges we must collectively address,” he said.

The chief executive officer, Ikeja Electric, Mrs. Folake Soetan said, opportunities in renewable energy was quite vast and held tremendous potential both economically and environmentally.

Soetan stated that Nigeria’s real energy potentials showed the availability of abundant resources to drive renewable energy generation.

She revealed that the electricity distribution company in recognition of the potential of renewable technology was actively exploring partnership with the Lagos State government to bring energy to life responsibility, adding that, “we are partnering with renewable energy sector experts and World Bank to scale up renewable energy projects in Lagos.”

Chief executive officer, All On, Mrs Caroline Eboumbou, represented by Hub manager, Mr. Sele Inegbedion stressed the need for more awareness to drive the adoption of renewable energy by Nigerians.

Group managing director, Cabota Group, Mr Raymond Akintayo emphasised the reduction in the use of fossil fuel, saying there is need to move to renewable energy for cleaner environment, less emission of pollutants deva.
