The official government email (gov email) domicile by Galaxy Backbone has more more guaranteed security than other email boxes such as the Yahoo mail and Gmail.
The Head of ICT, Federal Government Staff Housing Loan Board, Festus Boman stated this in an interview with LEADERSHIP in Abuja.
He spoke on sideline of a-one day training organised by Galaxy Backbone for the ICT staff of the board on official gov email.
Galaxy Backbone was established by the Federal Government to operate a nationwide IP-based network that will provide a common platform for connectivity and other infrastructure services for all Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
In fulfilment of this mandate and under the direction of the Ministry of Communication, that all MDAs must have their unique email addresses, Galaxy Backbone has over the years created hundreds of thousands of unique email addresses for MDAs with all of them now having “gov.ng email address.
It was in furtherance of its mandate, the agency organised trained staff of the Federal Government Staff Housing Loan Board on how to use the official government email, Boman said.
He stated that: “The training was just based on the official gov email and it was just a one day training. It was just to train myself and my colleagues on how to use the gov mail.
“That is the official email because we purchased about 100 email boxes from there. So we needed to be trained so that we can also train other colleagues on how to use it, how to a kind of minimise into our handsets, how to change password, how to create a new email and the basic usage of it. That is all. It was a one day training. It was just about official gov mail.”
Boman said the training was impactful as they now create their customised email addresses themselves.
“When we came back, now we are creating new email boxes by ourselves because it is a customised email. That, is it belongs to us, our domain so if any staff is posted out, we deactivate the person and if anybody is posted in we can also create a new email for the person. And if anybody forgets his or her password, we can reset the password for the person,” he stated.
On the efficacy of official gov email, the board’s Head of ICT said: “You know the official email has come to stay and this digitalisation of offices process has also come to stay.
“So it is now very vital in that process because you can not use these other emails, Yahoo, Gmail and all that to do official transactions. If you do that, the chances of hacking into official into our official data is very high.
“But this official email, this govmail is domicile by the Galaxy and the security is more guaranteed than these other email boxes. So for them to create more email boxes, train more users, I mean the civil servants on that is very very important.”
He said the training did not come at another cost but it was part of contract for the purchase of 100 of the email boxes from Galaxy Backbone by the agency.
“The training is part of the contract (with them) because we purchase this gov mail, 100 of the email boxes and IP forms from them. So, it was part of the contract agreement that they will train the ICT staff on that. So that is what led to the training,” Boman noted. As you are aware, GBB is today the leading enabler of digital inclusion in Nigeria with a vision to extend same to the shores of Africa.
