At the opening ceremony of a two-week course on leadership and performance of management for directing staff of the NDDC, organised by the Human Resource Department of the commission in collaboration with the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), in Abuja yesterday, the acting managing director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, said that leadership is a concept that transcends job titles and organisational hierarchies. He noted that it is about setting vision, inspiring others to follow, and navigating the challenges that inevitably arise.

The MD/CEO who was represented by his chief of staff, Rev. Obegha Julius Oworibo said that in the context of the NDDC, leadership is synonymous with service to the people of the Niger Delta, service for the betterment of the communities, and service to the cause of sustainable development.

“As you take on your roles as directors, you are not just assuming positions of the authority; you are embracing a profound responsibility to shape the destiny of our region.

“Niger Delta region is not just a geographical entity, it is a place where dreams are born and nurtured, where cultures thrive, and where people’s lives are intertwined with the rich tapestry of our environment. It is a region blessed with abundant natural resources, but also beset by unique challenges. This workshop is a preparation for leadership excellence. Some might wonder why such training is necessary, especially for individuals who have already demonstrated exceptional competence in their previous roles. The answer lies in the unique challenges and opportunities that come with the leadership.

“The workshop is designed to provide you with a holistic view of leadership in the context of the NDDC. You will delve into topics such as strategic planning, stakeholders’ engagement, financial management, and sustainable development. You will learn from seasoned experts, engage in thought provoking discussions, and participate in practical exercise that stimulate real world scenarios. This immersive learning experience will equip you with the skills and insights necessary to lead with confidence and competence,” he said.

Also, the director-general of ASCON, Mrs C.O. Gaya said it is important to state that the relationship between the NDDC and ASCON is over a decade old and this two-week programme is another step towards building the competency of human resource capable of effectively delivering on the mandate of NDDC.

She said, “Effective leadership and performance management skills of the directing staff who are strategic managers at the NDDC must be sharpened and refocused to ensure greater effectiveness and efficiency.”
