The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commended the support of President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle the scourge of COVID-19 in West Africa.
The outgoing President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean Claude Kasi Brou, gave this commendation in his valedictory speech as he handed over to Dr. Omar Alieu Touray from The Gambia on Wednesday
Brou said “The joint mobilisation of our Member Countries under the coordination of the West Africa Health Organisation was instrumental in containing the ravages of the disease, pooling procurement of medicines, medical equipment, and vaccines, at a time of glaring inequalities between developed countries and the less fortunate ones.
“Our member states have also coordinated their policies in terms of enforcement of barrier measures and border management. Let me thank the ECOWAS Champion for the regional fight against COVID-19 President Muhammadu Buhari for the strong support provided.
“These measures have proven to be efficient as after 3 consecutive years of annual growth of more than 3%, the Region has recorded only a mild recession of 0.8%. Furthermore, the ECOWAS region proved to be resilient, returning to growth in 2021 at a rate of 4.2%, and a forecasted growth of 4.75% in 2022.”
