The director, Institute for Peace, Conflict and Developmental Studies, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Professor Felix Asogwa has identified accountable leadership as the only way to stop military coups in Africa.
He disclosed this to journalists yesterday on the occasion of the International Day for Peace held in Enugu.
Asogwa noted that the International Day for Peace is a special day designated by the United Nations to promote peace across the globe.
He stated that the Institute, which was established to deepen research in peace through different programmes has continued to grow from strength to strength and has continued to impact positively in Enugu and Southeast.
Reacting to the rising cases of military coups in Africa and insecurity, he said there was need for African leaders to tackle poverty, saying it was not good for Africa to be rated as poverty capital.
He decried the weaponisation of poverty by African leaders, saying it has created a very unfortunate environment for peace.
The renowned professor of Political Science noted that most times, military coups occur as a result of civilian coups, adding that some African leaders use all kinds of means to emerge against the wishes of the people.
He stated that what happened in Niger recently shows that people were not happy with the ruler, adding that so many countries in Africa are not happy with their rulers.
He warned that until there is accountable leadership, more African countries will continue to fall to military coups.
