Chairman of the ad-hoc committee on the cause and mystery surrounding the death of 12 years old Adebola Bright, Hon Noheem Adams has said that the final arbiter on the matter is the Nigeria Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

He made this known yesterday at a public hearing held in Lagos on the circumstances surrounding the death of the boy at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

According to him, the report of the committee’s report will be submitted to the House after which it will be forwarded to the council for a final decision on the matter.

Adams said from the submission made by Dr. Yomi Bayewu, during interrogation there was an infraction as the standard procedure was not followed after the second operation on Bright.

He said that the doctor agreed that part of the intestine was removed and discarded mistakenly by the nurses.

The lawmaker posited that the standard procedure after any operation is to send removed histology for pathologist to examine but that this was not done at Obitojs hospital.

The commissioner for health Dr. Akin Abayomi in his remarks pointed out that Obitoks Hospital Surgical Center has been sealed off temporarily because it is believed that standard procedure of operation was not followed.

He said when Dr. Clara Williams carried out surgery on Bright, at LASUTH, it was observed that the situation of the abdomen was chaotic, adding that the small intestine of Bright was missing.

Abayomi posited that the small intestine in the human body is very important and necessary for the survival of any human being adding that the logical conclusion is that during the second operation there was an injury which led to the seizure of blood flow.

The chairman Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Dr Benjamin Olowobutu said the incident that led to the death of Bright was unfortunate.
