Activists Back Lagos Ban Of Street Trading, Market Closure

Human rights activists under the auspices of Veteran Activists in Lagos State have urged residents and traders in the state to support the move of the state government to ban street trading and closure of markets with poor sanitation.

 They said the move was in the interest of the people of the state.

They challenged the state government to muster the courage to implement state laws that guide a cleaner environment and that ban street trading.

The activists also kicked against those condemning the state government for closing down some markets in the state, because of poor sanitation.

It will be recalled that the state government closed down some major markets in the state, such as Ladipo Market and Mile 12 market because of poor sanitation, just as it arrested some street traders and confiscated their wares.

A group, Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) , had condemned the move made by the state government.

Addressing journalists in Ikeja Lagos, the spokesperson of the Veteran Activists, Comrade Declan Ihekaire, along with leaders of other human rights groups noted that the step taken by the state government by banning street trading and closing some markets was in the interest of the masses, adding that, it is the duty of government to protect life property.
