For many years, the education system in Gombe State was plagued with daunting challenges. Schools were overcrowded, teachers were poorly trained, and the infrastructure was crumbling. Many families could not afford to send their children to school, and those who did often received a subpar education.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya was determined to change all of that. He knew that the key to achieving his vision was to invest in the education system. He started by increasing the state’s budget for education, which allowed him to recruit 1,000 teachers, build new schools, and improve existing ones.

The Governor has also taken giant steps to further improve the standard of education in the state. His government has extended the ongoing education reform, from primary and secondary schools to tertiary institutions in the state.

This bold step by Governor Yahaya is a clear indication of his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen of Gombe state has access to quality education regardless of their socio-economic status.

With this new policy, the government is determined to make tertiary education more affordable and accessible to all.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony of the Gombe State University (GSU) recently in Gombe, Governor Inuwa Yahaya, indicated that his government is determined to provide more funds to the education sector to ensure that every eligible student can afford to pay their tuition fees without financial strain.

The Governor announced his administration’s plans to the issues of funding for the university to expand its existing infrastructure, introduce new programmes to accommodate the increasing demand for higher education and to create an enabling learning environment for students.

He added that issues related to the payment of earned allowances of staff, promotion arrears, and PG study grants are also being looked into.

While other universities and institutions of higher education across the country are increasing tuition fees, thus putting higher education beyond the reach of the poor, the governor of Gombe state assured that his administration is working tirelessly to ensure that tuition fees at the state-owned GSU remain affordable.

According to experts in the education sector, the efforts and interventions by the governor will go a long way in improving the academic performance of students since they will be studying in a comfortable, conducive, and affordable environment.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya has indeed shown that he is a visionary leader committed to the development of Gombe state.

His extension of the ongoing education reform which had led to a sharp increase in the percentage of candidates in our public schools who passed WASSCE with 5 credits and above including Mathematics and English from 28% in 2019 to 73 and 78% percent in 2021 and 2022 respectively to tertiary institutions in the state is a commendable feat that will contribute to improving the standard of education in the state.

With this new shift and plans, studying in Gombe State University will remain  affordable and accessible to all.
