This came at the time the state government began the recruitment of 6,000 teachers for basic and post basic schools in the state.

Speaking at the inauguration of the committee, the state commissioner for basic education, Dr Lawan Yunusa Damzomo, said the state government under the leadership of Ma’am Umar Namadi was very concerned with the acute shortage of teachers in the state.

He said the state had already set a new policy and procedures for teachers’ recruitment, and over ₦2.2 billion had been included in the 2024 budget for the  recruitment.

According to him, the committee which includes representatives of government, civil society, traditional leaders and international partners is saddled with the responsibility of monitoring and ensuring due process in the recruitment.

FCDO’s senior education adviser, Mr. Ian Attfield, commended the new administration, while pledging the UK government’s support in reforming the state’s education sector.

“Nigeria is still experiencing a learning crisis, and one of the most vital ingredients that any state or government can do is to supply qualified, motivated and adequately supported teachers.

“The UK is delighted to see the progress being made across the board under the leadership and vision of Governor Namadi,” said Attfield.

Jigawa State team leader  of the  project, “Partnership for L’earning For All in Nigeria” ( PLANE) Mustapha B. Ahmad Sa’id, said they would continue to support the state to recruit enough qualified teachers to bridge the huge gap.
