Speaking with LEADERSHIP, the vice president, Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Govt. Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), Ugochukwu Eze, said, the shutdown was in line with the directive of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to protest the assault on the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and other Union’s officials allegedly on the order of the government of Imo State.

The union also disclosed that the continued refusal of government to implement agreements, non-payment of backlog of salaries, and pensions, discriminatory payment of salaries and non-compliance to the national minimum wage were responsible for its strike action.

According to him, the deep seaport has been shut since 6 am and will be on shutdown till the leadership of the unions give contrary directive.
