In the spirit of the forthcoming Christmas season, the management of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Akwa Ibom State, has slashed the cost of surgery for all forms of ailments by 50 percent.

The measure takes ” immediate effect,” the management said yesterday.

The deputy chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) of the institution, Prof Eyo Effiong Ekpe, who announced this, said the compassionate decision was reached by the management team of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) led by the chief medical director (CMD), Prof EmemAbasi Bassey.

It was gathered that the gesture became necessary to cushion the harsh economic realities occasioned by the prevailing economic meltdown with hyper-inflationary trends weighing down the pockets of most patients, especially the indigent ones.

He said, “I wish to inform you that our amiable chief medical director, Prof. EmemAbasi Bassey, with his management team, has graciously approved a 50 percent reduction in the operation fee for all types of surgical operations.

“The discounted operation fee takes immediate effect, and will end by December 2023. Concerned patients are advised to undergo their operation within this period to benefit from the rate,” he said.

Also, in aid of cancer patients and renal issues, Governor Umo Eno, had recently donated N30 million to the institution following increasing cases of such terminal ailments in the state.
