Former head of state and chairman, National Peace Committee, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, has said N30,000 minimum wage is not acceptable anywhere in the world and cannot be used for any meaningful human development.

He therefore challenged Nigerians to harness the resources within their areas to improve their standard of living.

Abdulsalami stated this in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, yesterday, when he delivered a speech at a maiden Peace, Unity and Reconciliation Summit, organised by Taraba Independent Peace Committee.

The former head of state who was represented at the occasion by Rev. Fr. Atah Bakindo, the head of secretariat of Kukah Centre and National Peace Committee, urged the people of Taraba to shun any form of violence and embrace peace to develop themselves with the natural resources the state is blessed with.

He said though the state is blessed with several natural resources, it cannot experience development with a lack of peace and unity necessary for development to thrive.

“I want to plead with the Nigerian president that the N30,000 national minimum wage cannot take Nigerians anywhere, it is not acceptable anywhere in the world and it cannot develop anybody, there is an urgent need to increase the wages for the betterment of our growth.

“I want to urge the people of Taraba State to reconcile whatever kind of difference that created clashes and disunity, you cannot harness any development if you are not in peace and unity, you are fortunate to have the natural resources, peace and unity is the only bedrock of development,” he said.
