Chairman for the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Cross River State chapter, Mrs. Faith Edu, has promised to increase the number of girls studying engineering and other science-related courses at the state university.
Edu made the pledge when she answered questions from journalists in Calabar, the Cross State capital yesterday.
She was Inaugurated as chairman and her Exco members at Nigeria Society of Engineers Secretariat, Calabar.
She said, “My team and I have concluded arrangements to ensure that the dream is actualised and wipe out the erroneous belief that the engineering profession is exclusively reserved for the male gender.
“I will organise science programmes for pupils in primary and post- primary school to teach them how to build bridges with straws to awaken that scientific knowledge in them.
“A lot of these kids have the potential in them, if you don’t set that spark up, the fire in them will never burn. I think this is going to be like a pet project to me.
“My team and I will organise a mentorship programme that will prepare the minds of young people ahead of life after school, because the majority of them don’t know what awaits them after school.
In her remarks, Dr. Adebisi Osim, who spoke on the topic: “Electronic solutions for Artificial Intelligence Healthcare in Nigeria” called for the encouragement of young girls to study engineering and other fields of science.
