Executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu, has urged the National Assembly to enact all pending and unattended gender equality bills brought before it in order to protect the rights of women and girls in the country.

He made the call yesterday in Abuja at a press conference heralding the 16 days of activism against gender based violence which starts from today to December 10, 2023 in all 36 states of the federation including the FCT.

He said passing the gender equality bill would not in any way counter the male gender or impede on its rights, but help bring parity to those who have been marginalised or deprived of certain fundamental rights and privileges.

He added that the NHRC stands resolute in its commitment to address critical issues affecting the rights of women and girls and described the 16 days of activism spearheaded by the commission as a poignant reminder of the pressing need to confront the multifaceted challenges faced by women and girls and by extension the larger society.

While explaining that the activism against gender based violence is an international campaign that takes place every year from commencing from November 25, which is the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and ends on December 10, which is the International Human Rights Day, Ojukwu added that the commission was committed to foster an environment that upholds the rights of women in all facets of  economic life.
