No fewer than 260 women and youths have benefited from a skill acquisition programme provided by a member of the 9th House of Representatives, Hon. Micah Jiba, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The youths and women who were selected from Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Bwari area council were trained on fashion designing, cake, confectionary, make up, Gele, Fascinators, Turban and Head-gears and chemical works among others.

Jiba, during the skills empowerment programme yesterday in Abuja, said that the programme was borne out of the desire to remove jobless youths and women from the street and make them self reliant.

The former lawmaker who was represented at the event by Prince Nomsoor Joseph, said that despite the fact that he is no longer a serving member of the House of Representatives, he needed to fulfill the promise he made to the people during his electioneering campaigns.

“Although, we did not win the election, but we made a promise to the people that we will empower them and that is the promise we are fulfilling today. After the training, we will be giving them startup packs for them to start a business of their own,” he said.

Representative of the collaborating firms,
Alpha Vision Engineering Ltd and Magnate Ligne Services Ltd, Mr. Anderson Newton said that they decided to train the youths and women from the councils, in order to make them self reliant in the society.

“Because of the present economic challenges and lack of government jobs, that is why we decided to train them, so that they will stop complaining of lack of jobs and be able to start up something on their own.

One of the beneficiaries, Elisha Favour, commended the organisers for the empowerment programme, which she said will removed most them from the street seeking for jobs.
