Roma boss Jose Mourinho could be hammered following his controversial comments about referee Matteo Marcenaro before Roma’s 2-1 draw at Sassuolo last weekend, according to reports.

Mourinho’s men came from behind to beat their 10-man hosts but the match was overshadowed by his comments before they had even kicked the ball.

Before last Sunday’s clash, Mourinho questioned Marcenaro’s emotional state, admitting he was “worried” about having the referee in charge of his team’s match.

“To be honest, I will say that I am worried about the referee,” he said in his pre-match press conference on Saturday.

“We had this official three times and I don’t think he has the emotional stability to work at this level.”

The FIGC, the Italian football federation, opened an investigation into Mourinho’s comments that same day and, after concluding it on Monday, the Portuguese coach was summoned to a meeting with prosecutor Giuseppe Chine on Friday to explain his comments, according to reported La Gazzetta dello Sport.

According to the report, Mourinho cooperated with the FIGC during their 90-minute meeting, but could still receive a suspension of up to 10 days as part of a plea deal.

If this were the case, the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss would likely miss a league match, with Roma hosting Fiorentina on Sunday night.

The Italian giants will also play Sheriff in the Europa League on Thursday before traveling to Bologna next Sunday.
