The Taraba State Government has suspended all mining activities and has ordered the immediate closure of mining sites across the state over looming security threats.

It said the decision was as a result of a credible security reports at its disposal, pointing to threats capable of undermining the existing peace and stability in the state.

The directive, which was approved by Governor Agbu Kefas, was announced in a statement issued on Friday in Jalingo by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Barr. Gebon Timothy Kataps.

According to the State government, “the decision followed security reports indicating serious risks associated with ongoing mining operations, with the potential to disrupt law and order and endanger lives and property in affected mining communities.”

The statement said the suspension was a proactive measure aimed at preventing a breakdown of law law and creating room for a comprehensive review of activities within the mining sector.

It added that mining operations would only be allowed to resume after the identified security threats have been adequately addressed and operators comply with stricter regulatory requirements.

“To ensure effective implementation of the directive, the state government will constitute a new task force to oversee security and safety around mining sites when operations eventually resume,” it stated.

The task force, according to the statement, will collaborate with security agencies, local authorities and stakeholders in the mining sector to strengthen monitoring, enforce compliance and prevent criminal elements from exploiting mining activities.

“The new framework will prioritise community safety and provide a secure environment for legitimate mining operations,” the statement noted.

Barr. Kataps directed all Local Government Area Councils and traditional rulers in the state to, on behalf of the governor ensure strict compliance with the suspension order within their respective jurisdictions.

He warned that any suspected violation of the directive should be reported immediately to the nearest security agency for prompt action, stressing that the government would treat any breach as a serious offence.

The SSG also disclosed that the state government has concluded plans to meet with artisanal miners next week to brief them on new security measures and operational guidelines that will govern future mining activities.

He reiterated the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while creating a secure and well-regulated environment for mining operations in the state.

The government further appealed to residents to support the initiative by complying with the suspension order and to report any suspicious activities around mining locations to security agencies.

It added that the success of the security measures depended on the cooperation of citizens, communities and stakeholders, and reiterated the ultimate objective was to preserve peace and to ensure economic activities do not compromise public safety.
