Shem Obafiaye, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer, known for his viral ‘Oga at the Top’ comment, has been elevated to the rank of Deputy Commandant-General (DCG), according to an announcement made by Babawale Afolabi, the NSCDC’s National Public Relations Officer.

Obafiaye gained nationwide attention in 2013 during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program. When asked to provide the NSCDC’s website, Obafiaye humorously replied, “The website is… excuse me… wait… it can only be made known by my Oga at the top,” while pointing upwards, sparking a viral sensation.

He was redeployed from his role as the Lagos Commandant shortly after the humorous incident. Now, after a decade, Obafiaye has risen to the esteemed position of Deputy Commandant-General.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, presided over the decoration ceremony of Obafiaye and two other colleagues, Fasiu Adeyinika and Ibrahim Raji, who previously served as commandants in Kwara and Imo states, respectively.

In a statement by the NSCDC, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the significance of loyalty, discipline, and the initiation of ideas for safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure. He urged the newly appointed DCGs to play pivotal roles as the nation’s cornerstones, stressing the ministry’s reliance on their assistance for significant development.

During the decoration ceremony held at the Aisha Rufai Conference Room in the Civil Defence, Fire, and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), Tunji-Ojo described the promotions as a recognition of hard work and a call to further duty. He urged the new DCGs to effectively mentor their subordinates, ensuring a seamless transition in their roles.

The elevation of Obafiaye and his colleagues to the position of Deputy Commandant-Generals marks a significant milestone in their careers within the NSCDC.

Earlier, Mr. Peter Ogbodo, the Director supervising the office of the Permanent Secretary, highlighted the myriad responsibilities that the NSCDC shoulders for internal security. He urged the Deputy Commandant-Generals (DCGs) to intensify their efforts in fulfilling these essential tasks.

Characterizing the promotion as a recognition of diligence and an invitation for further dedication, the Director urged the newly appointed DCGs to actively mentor their subordinates to ensure seamless operations and prevent any operational gaps.

He extended gratitude to the Minister of Interior for his effective representation within the Ministry, attributing the unprecedented achievements, notably in the history of board promotions, to the Minister’s innovative approach and unwavering commitment to the ministry’s objectives.
