The Kogi State Government has initiated a crackdown on illegal mining activities within the state.

The Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, spearheaded the enforcement of government directives aimed at halting unauthorized mining operations.

Reports indicate that several trucks loaded with coal, mined illegally in Ankpa Local Government Area, were impounded by the state government during the enforcement exercise.

Engr. Gegu, the driving force behind the campaign against illegal mining, collaborated with personnel from various security agencies including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, State Security Services, Nigeria Police, Taskforce on Illegal Possession of Light Arms, and Kogi State Vigilante Service.

The clampdown was deployed to restore order and compliance with federal government policies while enhancing revenue generation.

“We are committed to implementing federal government policies and aiding revenue generation,” the commissioner said.

“Despite our continuous appeals to miners approved by the Federal Government to register with the Ministry, illegal mining activities persist, causing significant harm to our communities.”

The Commissioner sternly warned all illegal mining companies and individuals to cease such activities immediately. He stressed that the law would take its course against anyone found engaging in unauthorized mining, emphasizing the assurance of prosecution for offenders.

The government’s swift action signals its determination to curb illegal mining and uphold lawful mining practices sanctioned by appropriate authorities. This move aligns with efforts to safeguard the state’s resources, communities, and regulatory compliance within the mining sector.
