The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Remi Tinubu, has urged elderly citizens to strengthen their bonds with loved ones and God as a key to a fulfilling life in their golden years.
She spoke at the maiden edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS).
In a statement released by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady stressed the importance of prioritizing elderly citizens, especially during the festive season.
“As we approach the festive season,” she said, “it becomes very important to emphasise the significance of prioritizing our elderly citizens in our Initiative. By reaching out to the elderly this festive period, we not only honour their contributions but also acknowledge the unique challenges they face.”
“This economic empowerment program,” she continued, “is borne of a steadfast commitment to the well-being of our elderly citizens and marks a significant stride in our collective pursuit of a more inclusive and compassionate society.”
Also speaking at the event was the Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G Musa, represented by a delegate. He expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her continued support of the Armed Forces and the Police. He also thanked the veterans for their service and assured them of the Armed Forces’ dedication to their well-being.
The theme for the RHIESS maiden edition is “Better Days Ahead.” According to Mrs. Buhari, the program serves as a beacon of hope, dignity, and prosperity for the nation’s elders.
Held simultaneously across all 36 states, the FCT, and the Veteran Armed Forces, the RHI distributed N100,000 each to 250 elderly beneficiaries per state, the FCT, and the Veteran Armed Forces, totalling N950 million. Additionally, beneficiaries received bags of rice, wheat, and other food items, and underwent medical tests.
