NDLEA Arrests 1,016, Seizes 9 Tons of Illicit Drugs In Kano

In 2023, the NDLEA arrested 1,016 suspects and confiscated nine tons of illicit drugs in Kano State.

The Commandant of the NDLEA in Kano State, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, disclosed on Sunday in Kano that among those arrested, 40 were females and 976 were males.

He said that the agency achieved 102 convictions during the outgoing year and facilitated the forfeiture of five vehicles, while 104 cases remained pending in court.

Idris-Ahmad also said that the seized drugs comprised 6,098kg of Indian hemp, 1,696kg of codeine and tramadol, and 1,335kg of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.

“In addition to this, we rehabilitated 70 clients, processed 598 visa clearance applications, and conducted 245 substance abuse tests, detecting six individuals who tested positive for various drug abuses,” Idris-Ahmad stated.

He further noted that the command conducted sensitization programmes for 5,000 individuals and enlisted Drug Demand Reduction professionals who provided counselling to 1,459 persons.

Moreover, the command destroyed more than 15 tons of assorted narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in 2023, he added.

Idris-Ahmad reaffirmed the command’s dedication to ensuring the well-being and safety of communities by combating the devastating consequences of drug abuse.

“We are determined to enhance efforts in dismantling drug networks, providing rehabilitation to those in need, obtaining convictions, and eliminating illicit substances to prevent the flourishing of drug trade,” Idris-Ahmad assured. (NAN)
