TCN Declares Force majeure Birnin-Kebbi Transmission Line After Storm Toppled Tower

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared a force majeure event on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission line after a storm toppled a tower along the corridor, disrupting bulk power transmission.

According to a press release signed by TCN management on 8 September 2026, the line first tripped at 10:44 p.m. on Monday, 7 September, and a trial reclosure at 11:07 p.m. failed as the line tripped again. Linesmen from TCN’s Birnin Kebbi sub-region subsequently carried out a fault-finding patrol and discovered on 8 September that Tower T367 had collapsed.

Preliminary findings indicated that heavy winds and rainstorms in the area caused the collapse, prompting TCN to declare force majeure on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Transmission Line (2KNJ–BRK1). The incident has affected the transmission of bulk electricity through the corridor, the company said.

TCN stated that it has commenced arrangements to mobilise personnel, equipment and other resources to the site to rehabilitate the collapsed tower and restore the line to service within the shortest possible time. In the interim, the company said it has maintained electricity transmission to Sokoto by enabling the Talata Mafara–Sokoto corridor to receive supply through an alternative path from the Kaduna-Mando axis via the 132kV Zaria–Funtua–Gusau transmission line.

The company expressed regret over any inconvenience to electricity consumers and stakeholders affected by the incident and assured the public that every effort is being made to restore normal bulk power transmission service as quickly as possible.
