Reasons have been adduced to the resignation of Hon. Edison Ehie as speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Ehie, who represented Ahoada-East Constituency 2 in the House, in a statement he issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday evening, also vacated his seat as a member of the legislature.
LEADERSHIP observed that the resignation of the factional speaker was never part of the resolutions reached during a peace parley presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja in December 2023.
Although the reasons to the resignation of the High Court-recognised speaker could not be immediately ascertained, one reason of that move was to allegedly create a vacuum in the House considering that fact that there is no Deputy Speaker to step into his shoes.
Another reason was to allegedly pave the way for his appointment as the chief of staff to the governor, even though the current chief of staff, Hon. Chidi Amadi, is yet to resign his appointment.
Also adduced for the Ehie’s resignation was to allow the National Assembly to take over the Rivers State House of Assembly, since the House has only five members.
Ehie had declared as vacant the seats of 25 members of the House, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
