BIU Wins Big At West African Varsity Championship

Ben Idahosa University, (BIU), Edo State has been awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP), at the just concluded West African University Championship 2023, held in Nigeria.

The university which maintained dominance in table tennis secured 3 remarkable MVP awards out of 8 presented at the championship.

It was also gathered that the university emerged as the 2nd runner-up on the medals table, against 22 universities from Ghana and Nigeria.

LEADERSHIP reports that BIU claimed the title of the 1st Nigerian university on the medals table, surpassing powerhouses such as the host university Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Ibadan (UI), and others.

BIU also had a clean sweep from table tennis with their male and female players taking the top honours in their respective categories.

The male and female table tennis MVPs showcased not only exceptional skills but also a commendable team spirit that contributed to BIU’s overall success.

“The trio of MVP awards underscored BIU’s commitment to excellence across multiple disciplines, making them a force to be reckoned with in the West African University Championship.

The championship, which brought together 17 universities from Nigeria and 5 from Ghana, served as a melting pot of talent, diversity, and sportsmanship. As BIU celebrated their victories, the event highlighted the strength of unity and collaboration among West African universities, transcending borders in the pursuit of athletic excellence.”

“The West African University Championship 2023 will be remembered not only for the intense competition on the field but also for the moments of triumph, surprises, and the outstanding achievements of BIU. As the BIU contingent returns home with their heads held high, they carry with them not just medals but a legacy of determination, skill, and the unwavering spirit of champions,” the statement read.
