The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has asked the Police Commissioner of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command to set up two additional Police Divisions in Gwagwalada Area Council to address security concerns in the region.

Wike issued this directive during a security town hall meeting with relevant stakeholders in Gwagwalada, focusing on finding lasting solutions to the security challenges affecting the federal capital.

The decision was prompted by the Chairman of the Council, Mr Abubakar Giri’s request for additional police divisions to enhance security, especially in border communities. Currently, the area council has only two police divisions, one each in Zuba and Gwagwalada.

Giri also raised concerns about abandoned buildings becoming safe havens for criminals, urging action to address the security threats posed by such structures.

Acknowledging the challenges, Wike assured residents of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to resolving security issues in the FCT. He stated that the two new police divisions would be established promptly to meet security demands.

The minister also revealed that he secured President Tinubu’s approval to procure and distribute operational vehicles and communication gadgets to the police and other security agencies in the FCT.

Wike requested the council chairman to submit a letter by Monday, indicating the number and locations of all incomplete buildings posing security threats.

He assured that he would approve the demolition of these structures or transfer ownership to the communities for completion and appropriate use.

Wike also promised to construct a suitable health facility and implement other development projects in response to the residents’ requests.

During the town hall meeting, Wike stressed the importance of addressing security challenges, stating, “Security is one of the priorities of the current government, so, be rest assured that you are not alone, and we will do all that we can to end security challenges in the territory.”

Mohammed Magaji, the Aguma of Gwagwalada, also appealed to the minister for more operational vehicles for the police and the construction of an additional General Hospital to enhance health services in the area.

Wike’s tour of the six Area Councils of the FCT aims to engage with community leaders and stakeholders, addressing security concerns following recent incidents of abductions and killings by bandits in the territory.

The minister assured stakeholders in Bwari Area Council, visited earlier, that the FCT Administration would provide necessary logistics and equipment to support security agencies in combating criminal activities.
