The president, Defence and Police Officers Wives’ Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Musa, has promised to sponsor 40 officers and soldiers’ wives for mammogram test in order to prevent breast cancer.
She advised wives of military personnel to engage in regular physical exercise and medical check-ups.
Mrs Musa stated this at the DEPOWA aerobics walk and health exercise at Lungi Barracks Abuja at the weekend.
She said the benefit of exercise to the body could not be over emphasised, adding that the medical screening conducted before the exercise had enabled them to identify people that needed to take extra care of their health.
She urged them to be deliberate on their health to be able to stay healthy and fit to take care of the home front while their husbands are away on duty.
“We must be deliberate about our health, we must take care of ourselves so that we will be able to take care of the home and everybody.
“This is why we are here today and we must take exercise as we eat food, because that is one of our foods to the body. We must take it seriously and continue to take our health very seriously and practicing this daily.
“We can start 30-minutes walk a day and then gradually you progress,” she said.
The DEPOWA president promised to sponsor 40 women to undergo mammogram test as part of efforts to check cervical cancer among barracks women.
The chairman, health and sports committee of DEPOWA, Dr Juliette Ango, spoke to the women on the advantages of regular check-ups was well as the dangers of not paying attention to their health.
