Popular Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham is facing a frustrating battle against piracy after her latest film, “Malaika,” was illegally leaked online. In response, the Lagos State Police Command has taken action, charging six suspects in court for their alleged involvement in the crime.

The suspects, identified as Kehinde Oseni, Adekunle Segun, Adebiyi Sodiq, Oseni S. Akano, Agboola Motunrayo, and Adebiyi Suliat, face charges of stealing intellectual property, conspiracy, and attempting to obstruct justice.

“Malaika” premiered in Lagos on December 17, 2023, and made its nationwide theatrical debut on December 22. However, shortly after its release, pirated copies of the film began circulating online, causing significant financial losses for Abraham and the movie’s producers.

The Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Ikoyi, Lagos, identified and apprehended six individuals suspected of being responsible for the piracy. Spokesperson Aminat Mayegun announced the charges against them, citing “conspiracy, infringement on intellectual property, piracy, and cyber-related crimes” for their alleged use of cyberspace to illegally broadcast the film.

According to Mayegun, a criminal complaint was filed by Abraham and Seun Olayemi, the co-producer of “Malaika.” All six suspects were arraigned on Tuesday, January 31st, at the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Tinubu.

Toyin Abraham has spoken openly about the emotional toll the piracy ordeal has taken on her, including experiencing panic attacks and hospitalization.

She urges fans to support legitimate platforms for watching films and condemn the spread of pirated content.
