A pressure group, ‘Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano’, has called on the Kano State House of Assembly to carry out a comprehensive review of the State’s Emirate Law and alleged illegal deposition of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 14th Emir of Kano.

The chairman of the group, Najib Abdulkadir, in an interview with LEADERSHIP, said their request was aimed at restoring the once unrivalled prestige of the old Kano Emirate.

Abdulkadir spoke to our correspondent in Kano on the heels of the reactions generated by the viral letter written by his association to the Kano State House of Assembly on the matters.

Denying speculations of external influence, Abdulkadir emphasised that, “We are sending this request in order to bring back the prestige of the once unrivalled Kano Emirate,” adding that their motive was not influenced by any external force or prompting but driven by a genuine desire to see a proper order is restored.

Despite submitting the said request letter to the Kano State House of Assembly on February 5, 2024, LEADERSHIP gathered that the Assembly has not addressed the matter during its subsequent sittings.

Abdulkadir, however, revealed that this was not the first time they had sought a review of the Emirate structures in the State, citing previous attempts, which were ignored during the tenure of the immediate-past administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, which is responsible for the balkanisation of the old Kano Emirate and establishment of additional four Emirates in the State.

Expressing optimism about their current advocacy for a review, Abdulkadir believed that Emir Sanusi’s dethronement by Governor Ganduje was unlawfully executed, hence there was a need for a review and remedy.

He clarified that, “We are not doing this because of a personal vendetta against the Emirates, we just want to see things done in the proper order.”

The speculation surrounding the future of the new Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi Emirates has intensified since the group’s letter asking for a review surfaced on social media.

The Kano State government was yet to comment on the matter even though a former governor of the State and national leader of the ruling NNPP in the State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had recently hinted at the possibility of reviewing the Emirate Law during an interview following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Supreme Court victory in January.
