In a space of 90 minutes, a game between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions that I didn’t know for sure how to control. Is this what watching the premiere leagues and championships entail? From praying for another team’s downfall, to speaking in tongues, to being on my feet and feeling the need to take the ball from the boys and show them how it’s done. By the time I was celebrating the second goal fromOsimhen which was later cancelled and then led to the discovery that there was a penalty against theNigerian team, at this point was when I knew I have had it up to here. I called it quits; I was sure I was not watching again; I don’t know why I was angry at innocent South African men who were just playing a game. Why was I angry at myself? It was happening so fast I knew I had to be in control of these emotions or something else would just come out from it. Wow, I must give my respect and kudos to the men who keep watching the team they love, come and go. How do they do it? How do they get a hold of these feelings and most especially the heart palpitations?

Welcome to Health Situations, where today we’re delving into the important topic of heart attacks, particularly in the context of football. It’s a reminder of the significance of knowing ourselves and our limits, especially in moments of excitement.

Recently, a tragic incident occurred during the Nigeria vs South Africa football match, highlighting the risks associated with intense emotions and physical exertion. Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a medical doctor, suffered a massive heart attack and passed away during the game according to Punch news. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of self-awareness and understanding our body’s signals.

So, what exactly is a heart attack? Simply put, “it occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is severely reduced or blocked. This blockage is often caused by a build-up of fat, cholesterol, and other substances in the heart arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis. Sometimes, these deposits can rupture and form a clot, further obstructing blood flow to the heart. During a heart attack, the lack of blood flow can lead to damage or even death of part of the heart muscle. It’s a serious medical emergency that requires immediate attention and treatment” these are excerpts from Mayo Clinic.

So, how can we stay vigilant about our heart health, especially during moments of excitement like football matches? Here are some simple tips:

Know thyself: Understand your body’s capabilities and thresholds. Don’t push yourself beyond what feels comfortable, especially during high-stress situations like intense sports events. I like to emphasize knowing thyself.

Pay keen attention to your body: Pay attention to any warning signs or symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or discomfort in the arms, back, neck, or jaw. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.

Be on alert: If you have a history of heart disease or other risk factors, make sure to have emergency medications on hand, like creating emergency exits and knowing how to use them in case of an emergency.

In conclusion, it’s crucial to prioritize our heart health and take proactive steps to prevent heart attacks, even in moments of excitement and adrenaline. By staying informed, listening to our bodies, and knowing our limits, we can help reduce the risk of heart-related emergencies and livehealthier, happier lives. Remember, your heart is your most precious asset—take care of it.
