Edo State Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Hon. Ethan Uzamere, has emphasised the need for the federal government to allocate more resources to road infrastructure projects in the State.

The Commissioner, who made the call at a press briefing in Benin City, underscored Edo State’s strategic significance as a major thoroughfare connecting various regions of Nigeria.

He pointed out that the heavy traffic flow, particularly of articulated vehicles, has strained the state’s roads, leading to wear and tear.

The Commissioner asserted that the work on the Benin–Asaba Road corridor, which connects Edo and Delta States was being jointly handled by the two state governments.

“There is a misconception that the state government does not work on roads that belong to the federal government and also when it comes to road construction, to me in terms of administration, we should look at systems. How to solve a system,” he stated.

He urged the federal government to prioritise Edo State in its road maintenance budgets, considering its pivotal role in national transportation networks.

While acknowledging the state government’s efforts to improve road conditions, Mr. Uzamere stressed the ongoing need for further investments to enhance road accessibility and alleviate congestion.

Highlighting specific initiatives, Mr. Uzamere mentioned the construction of new roads and ongoing repairs, including addressing issues such as the congestion at Ikpoba Slope in Ikpoba Okha local government area of the State.

He also addressed drainage concerns, emphasising the importance of unblocking and maintaining drainage systems to prevent flooding and ensure free water flow into the Ikpoba River.

Despite the challenges posed by rising cost of materials, Mr. Uzamere emphasised the importance of adhering to high construction standards to ensure the durability of roads in Edo State, underscoring the need for infrastructure that withstands the test of time.
