The federal government has constructed 9,178 sanitation facilities to serve public places like markets, parks and schools in 127 local government areas of the country.
Minister of Water Resources, Prof Joseph Utsev, made this known during the 30th regular meeting of the National Council on Water Resources and Sanitation which ended yesterday in Abuja.
He urged states, local governments, development partners and the private sector to take advantage of dams and other facilities provided by the federal government in their domains for the socio-economic development of the nation.
The minister who called on states and local governments to join the irrigation farming-drive of the current administration, said time had come to transit from traditional agricultural methods to modern technological approach for greater productivity and food security.
Prof Utsev disclosed that the government was developing 15,000 hectares of irrigation farmland to be handed over to farmers by the end of the first quarter of this year while 500,000 hectares would be added by 2030.
He promised to re-engage the 10th Senate for the passage of the Water Resources Bill to enhance effective management of the water sector.
FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, represented by the permanent secretary, Dr Udoh Samuel Atang, expressed commitment to the attainment of SDG 6 which is sustainable water and sanitation for all by 2030.
