President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, has expressed his admiration for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commendable statesmanship in his treatment of the Super Eagles upon their return from the just-concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

Despite not securing the biggest continental soccer trophy, the team exhibited exceptional determination and displayed resilience throughout their journey, ultimately securing a well-deserved second-place finish.

Gumel, in a statement released on Tuesday morning by NOC spokesperson, Tony Nezianya, hailed President Tinubu’s decision to reward the players with the prestigious National Honour of MON, saying it was a great pride and motivation to future representatives.

”President Tinubu’s decision to award the team with the prestigious National Honours of MON brings great pride and motivation to future representatives of our beloved country.

“This esteemed recognition will undoubtedly serve as a driving force for upcoming athletes, inspiring them to give their all in pursuit of victory for our Fatherland,” Gumel said

The NOC boss also commended President Tinubu’s discernment in appreciating the team’s efforts and acknowledging their significant contribution to Nigerian sports.

“His support and recognition not only inspire the Super Eagles but also unite the nation behind its athletes, fostering a stronger sense of national pride and unity.

“With the President’s endorsement and encouragement, Nigerian athletes will be motivated to demonstrate the true spirit of sportsmanship and strive for excellence on both national and international platforms,” he added.

Gumel noted that the NOC believed that the recognition by the Grand Patron of the Committee, will pave the way for greater achievements in the future, fostering a culture of success and excellence within the Nigerian sports community.

The NOC, therefore, extended its heartfelt gratitude to President Tinubu for his remarkable leadership and support of the Super Eagles, adding that his decision to honour the team with the National Honour of MON emphasised the importance of recognising and celebrating the efforts of our athletes, serving as a catalyst for even greater success in the years to come.
