Nigerian winger Femi Azeez could make his Brighton & Hove Albion debut against Coventry City on Sunday after head coach Fabian Hürzeler confirmed the new signing is closing in on full fitness.
Azeez joined Brighton from Millwall on transfer deadline day but has yet to feature for the Seagulls after suffering a minor hamstring injury shortly after completing his move.
The 25-year-old has now returned to training and could be involved when Brighton travel to the CBS Arena for their weekend fixture.
Hürzeler provided an encouraging update on Azeez’s condition ahead of the match, revealing that the Nigerian is expected to train with the first-team squad.
“Also regarding him, I hope he will be an option. He will definitely train today with the squad and hopefully everything is fine, and then he hopefully is an option for the weekend,” Hürzeler told reporters.
Azeez made one appearance for Millwall this season before sealing his move to Brighton, and he will now be eager to make his first competitive appearance for his new club.
The former Reading winger brings pace, direct running and attacking versatility to Hürzeler’s squad and could provide another option in the wide areas if declared fit.
Brighton will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United, a result which left them with one victory from their opening three Premier League fixtures.
With the Seagulls seeking to return to winning ways, Azeez could be handed the opportunity to make an immediate impression if he successfully completes training without any further setback.
For the Nigerian, Sunday’s trip to Coventry could therefore mark the beginning of a new chapter in his career as he targets his first appearance in Brighton colours.
