A social political organisation group, Non State Actors Consultative Forum (NOSACOF) has called on members of the National Assembly to exercise caution on the plot to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari over the ongoing spate of insecurity in the country.

Lawmakers across party lines had threatened to impeach President Muhammadu if nothing is done to improve the security situation after a six-week ultimatum. Nigeria is currently facing heightened insecurity from terrorists, kidnappers and bandits.

The group acknowledged that the economic and security challenges bedeviling Nigeria have got worse in recent months. Beyond insecurity, more Nigerians have fallen below the poverty line, while the economy has gone south.

In a statement that was jointly signed by its convener Abdulrazaq Alkali and co-convener Ernest Bako, the group however said it will be out of place for the National Assembly to wholly lay the entire blame of insecurity on President Buhari.

“The issue of insecurity predates Buhari’s presidency. Hence, we, as a group, wish to advise the aggrieved Senators to channel their energy and time to making quality legislations that will bring permanent solutions to Nigeria’s insecurity,” the group said.

Amidst all these turbulence, legislative chambers in Nigeria are most at times full of drama’s due to the incompetent behaviour of some the legislators, a dangerously new twist have started to unfold in the National Assembly, where some members of the opposition and some disgruntled members of the ruling party are making moves for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari and fueling accusations and sentiments against the president and his team in order to get backing from Nigerians. However, in doing so, t

NOSACOF said the National Assembly members are being hypocritical with the contending issue by not looking at their “failures and how their incompetence’s have contributed to the worsening economic and security the situation in Nigeria.”

The group said the current security problems of Nigeria today is as a result of accumulation of years of incompetence, selfishness, greed, injustice and corruption perpetrated by mostly political leaders who are shielded by ethnic and religious entities, a weak and corrupt justice system and to some extend by common citizens.

NOSACOF said despite some weakness on the part the President Buhari, it will be unjust to lay all the blame on his table and start calling for his impeachment, rather the legislators should focus on finding real solutions of making citizens-oriented legislation that will bring solutions to the insecurities tormenting the country.

“They have also failed to carry out the oversight functions on the various security arms of the government despite billions of dollars budgeted for security, instead the majority of them have focused their attention on befriending the head of these agencies in their chase for getting contracts and other financials gains,” the group stated.
