The shortage of power supply in Yobe State has caused water scarcity for the residents of the state, especially in Damaturu metropolis.

LEADERSHIP gathered that areas which are mostly affected in the state capital are Alimarami, Ajari, Pawari, Shagari low-cost, Nayinawa and Pompomari.

A resident of Alimarami Malama Ameera, Abdullah stated, “There is acute water shortage at Alimarami and some parts of Shagari new extension, a cart of 12 jerry cans of water fetched from commercial boreholes now costs N800 to N1000.”

Another resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “In my place, Ajari, a cart of 12-jerry cans of water is sold at the cost of N1,200, the situation is bad.”

Following the water scarcity in Damaturu, the state capital, Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, has directed the distribution of diesel to all boreholes in Damaturu and environs to ease the problem of water scarcity being faced in the past few days.

A statement from the secretary to the state government, Baba Mala Wali, Buni said there were enough diesel for distribution to enable the powering of all boreholes in the affected areas, promising that the problem would be resolved immediately.

The residents of Damaturu and environs have been battling with acute water scarcity as a result of the destruction of 330Kv electricity line by suspected Boko Haram members last month.

The destruction of the 330Kv line has made it difficult to power borehole generators that would supply potable water to residents.
