7 Things To Do Before Seeing The Doctor

An elderly man once shared why he prefers patronizing drug stores over visiting the hospital to see a doctor. He explained that while the doctor uses complex medical jargon, the drug store owner communicates clearly and provides the right medications for his discomforts. This highlights a common issue: a communication gap between patients and doctors.

To ensure productive and effective visits to the doctor, here are 7 practical tips to follow:
Observe Your Symptoms Closely: Pay close attention to your symptoms and try to articulate them accurately. Avoid using vague terms like “my stomach is biting me, my head is blowing me hot air, inside of my leg is drawing me, my head is hitting me hammer, my eyes are seeing double-double”. These are the reasons why observing intently and finding the absolute best term to communicate will help the doctor and also help us in return. It is wiser to communicate how we feel, in short and precise terms, examples are: I feel dizzy, I feel like vomiting what I ate, I feel headache intensely. This will make every session seamless and easier especially because you have observed and you can categorically state accurately what your feelings are. So, when next you go for a checkup, make sure it starts first with you.

Observe and record where necessary, you might just be a step away from the best treatment.
Communicate in Your Preferred Language: If you’re not comfortable speaking English, don’t hesitate to request an interpreter or ask if the doctor understands your native language. Effective communication is essential for conveying your symptoms and concerns accurately.
Write Down your Questions and Thoughts: Before your appointment, jot down any questions or concerns you have. This will help you stay focused during the consultation and ensure that you address all relevant issues with your doctor.

Bring a Companion: Consider bringing a family member or friend to your appointment. They can offer support, help you remember important information discussed during the visit, and ask questions on your behalf if needed.
Educate Yourself About Your Symptoms: Take the time to research your symptoms before seeing the doctor. While it’s essential to be informed, remember to defer to the doctor’s expertise and avoid self-diagnosis. Use your knowledge to better understand the doctor’s explanations and ask relevant questions.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask Questions: Your consultation is an opportunity to clarify any doubts or uncertainties about your health. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about your symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and potential side effects. Understanding your condition and treatment plan is crucial for your well-being.
Inquire About the Treatment Plan: Discuss your treatment plan with the doctor to understand the prescribed medications, potential side effects, and follow-up care. Being informed about your treatment will empower you to take an active role in managing your health.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your visits to the doctor are not only productive but also educational. Effective communication and proactive engagement with your healthcare provider are essential for promoting your health and well-being.
