Academic and administrative activities were paralyzed at Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, as members of Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASUU) begun a nationwide seven-day warning strike on Monday over non-payment of their four-month salaries.

The vice chancellor of the University, Professor Sabo Abdul Karim, and senior administrative staff, lecturers and students were all left stranded for hours as all the University’s entrance gates were locked due to the strike.

Though some students and lecturers were later allowed to enter the University’s premises through the pedestrian gate, but academic activities were grounded while some lecturers were forced to suspend their lectures due to the tense situation.

While fielding questions from journalists, chairman of FUD branch of NASUU, Comrade Alhassan Abdullahi, said they joined the nationwide warning strike called by their national leadership in response to the failure of the federal government to listen to their demands.

“A series of letters and engagements were made with federal government delegation with regards to the payment of our outstanding August to December 2023 salaries, but up till now, there was no any positive response.

“We did not embark on the warning strike to disturb anyone or cause problem to the country’s educational sector, the warning strike is aimed at speaking to federal government with the language they understand and make them to understand our grievance.

“After the seven-day warning strike, if there is no any positive response, the NASUU Federal University Dutse will fully comply with further directives and decision to be taken by our national headquarters,” Comrade Abdullahi declared.
