Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abia State command, has vowed to scale-up both proactive and preventive measures to ensure security in schools in the state.

The state commandant of the corps, Usman Alfadarai stated this at a meeting with the armed female squad and the safe school team at the command’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital.

He said the federal government set up the safe school programme with the corps as the lead agency to ensure the safety of both human beings and infrastructure in schools in the country.

“This is indeed a laudable initiative and the command is fully committed to its realisation,” Alfadarai said but expressed worry over the recent abductions of children from schools in some parts of the country.

He told members of the squad that the corps’ heart bleeds when non-state actors attempt to disrupt the peace of the society and desecrate the serenity of the school environment.

“The creation of the squad is a strategic response of the commandant-general of the corps, Ahmed Audi to provide kinetic support to the safe school programme.”

“You must, therefore, discharge your duties in a manner that will restore the confidence of Nigerians in the corps and justify your establishment.”

He extolled officers for their courage, commitment and perseverance during their recent training on professional knowledge and combat readiness.

The commandant described the state Ministry of Education and the Homeland Security as strategic partners in the implementation of the safe school project in the state.

He said under his leadership, the command had fully complied with the recent directives of the commandant general to all formations to focus on the corps’ mandate for enhanced performance.
