Over 100 inmates including those on life sentence and on death row across correctional facilities in Kano State have sought for clemency from the state governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf Kabiru.

Others on the list of clemency are those serving long sentences, those with serious medical challenges, elderly and others who have either exhausted their appeal or seeking clemency based on other reasons.
The spokesperson of the Kano Command of Nigeria Correctional Service, Musbahu Lawan, in a statement issued to media on Thursday, stated that the controller of the command, Suleiman Inuwa, presented the list of those who formally applied for clemency to the chairperson of the Kano state Prerogative of Mercy Committee, Hajiya Azumi Namadi Bebeji, when they visited the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguza.

Inuwa expressed appreciation to the chairperson for shouldering the Iftar feeding programme in the facility and the effort it is making to decongest the custodial centres, saying, „Many have already exhausted their appeals, while some are seeking for clemency.“
The committee’s chairperson Hajiya Bebeji in her remarks assured inmates that government would look into their conditions based on the attestation of good conduct and industry while in custody, promising to present their case to the governor.

While calling on all inmates to obey the rules of the Custodial Centre and be productive to themselves and the society, she expressed delight about inmates who memorized the Holy Quran as well as the brilliance of some who got nine credits in the National Examination Council (NECO) and (NBIS) are seeking admission into the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
