CSOs Decry Drop In National Grid, Seek Immediate Action

Civil society activists, under the auspices of the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN), have decried the inconsistent electricity supply across Nigeria.
The CSOs called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the continuous decline in the national grid and the root cause of poor electricity supply.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja over the weekend, NCSCN executive director Blessing Akinlosotu stated that the state of electricity across the country has become a matter of national emergency, with repeated collapses of the national grid and the inability to fully transmit and distribute the minimal capacity being generated.

He said “Over 20 petitions have been brought before the Civil Society Council against the MD/CEO of TCN, with some directed at the leadership of the Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
“The most painful aspect of this situation to the civil society community is that while the nation is facing power shortages and epileptic supply, about 226 containers of power equipment and transformers owned by the TCN are stuck at various ports in Nigeria.”

NCSCN considers this failure to clear and take delivery of the containers of power equipment, along with the purchase of a car for the Minister of Power and other violations of the Procurement Act, as the height of irresponsibility and insensitivity to the plight of the masses, calling for stiff punitive measures against the MD/CEO of TCN.

In light of the foregoing, the NCSCN strongly demands the immediate suspension of Engr. Sule A. Abdulaziz by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and an investigation into these allegations by the EFCC. Additionally, the minister of Power should urgently address the Nigerian public on these matters.

“We hereby issue a seven-day ultimatum, starting from today, to relevant authorities President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, minister of Power, director general of the State Security Services, Inspector General of Police, and the General Public, to take action on the above demands.

“Failure to do so will leave us with no other option than to mobilise mass protests nationwide to drive home our demands. Nigerians can no longer tolerate the excesses of the MD of TCN, and we demand remedies now or never. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and God Save Nigeria.”
