Junior Chamber International (JCI), Aso in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has urged stakeholders and individuals to prioritize mental health support for overall well-being, encouraging regular check-ups and seeking support when needed.

The president of JCI Aso, Yetunde Adebisi, made the call yesterday in Abuja during the “Save A Soul Health Walk for Mental Health Awareness” with the theme: “Mental Health: A Universal Human Right.”
She reiterated that “Save a Soul” focuses on mental health awareness.

Adebisi said the move marked a significant shift in the organisation’s priorities, aligning with JCI’s new direction emphasising mental health.

She noted that “Save a Soul” aims to address the pressing issues surrounding mental health, recognising the widespread challenges faced by individuals in society.
Adebisi stated that the programme’s inception stemmed from a realisation within the organisation about the urgent need to prioritize mental well-being alongside traditional health concerns.

She said recognising the importance of reaching a broader audience, JCI Aso has extended its reach beyond university campuses to engage with communities at large.
On her part, the chairperson of the “Save a Soul” project, Oladejo Ayomide, stressed the critical importance of prioritising mental well-being in Nigeria.

Ayomide stressed the urgent need for individuals to take proactive steps to care for their mental health, stressing that the country lacks adequate support systems for those struggling with mental health issues.
Drawing from personal experience, Ayomide recounted the tragic loss of a friend to depression, underscoring the hidden nature of mental health struggles and the importance of seeking help when needed.

Also, a public health consultant, Dr Aderonke Akande, noted the importance of mental health awareness and advocacy during the JCI Mental Health Awareness event.
She highlighted the role of preventive care in promoting mental wellness, urging Nigerians to be mindful of the impact of social media and negative influences on their mental health.

While acknowledging government initiatives to improve mental health services, Dr Akande called for decisive actions to implement existing policies effectively.
She underscored the importance of tangible steps towards mental health support, beyond mere policy formulation and urged individuals to prioritize their mental well-being, encouraging regular check-ups and seeking support when needed.
