Jenik Freight is a Calgary-based logistics company focused on international freight forwarding. The firm specialises in providing import and export services via ocean and air to worldwide destinations. It is allowed to think such mighty stride must have come through the hands of a European or an American.

But Jenik Freight, located in Canada, is owned by Chukwujekwu Maduabuchukwu Onwughalu, fondly known as Jekwu Onwughalu, a Nigerian businessman who is fast emerging as a global leader in the freight business. He founded the company in 2016, but it has become one of the most trusted logistics and freight partners, shipping to every location worldwide with partners in over 150 ports and 300 cities across the world.

Jekwu Onwughalu studied mechanical engineering at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO). The inspiration to study engineering came from his father who owned an auto mechanic workshop, where he spent his holidays. Born into a family of seven, which comprises four girls and three boys, he was posted to Shell Canada where he completed the compulsory one-year training programme under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The experience would go on to shape a very successful future career in oil and gas before going into business.

Jekwu Onwughalu bagged a master’s degree in iPetroleum Engineering from Heriot Watt University, Scotland, after which he spent 15 years in Drilling, Completions and Workover operations in Nigeria and beyond. He went on to work with several multinational oil companies in Nigeria and outside the country, such as Tecon Oil Services and Petronas Carigali, Malaysia. As a Drilling and Completions supervisor in the oil and gas industry, he masterfully managed operations, material, and human logistics, before going into entreprenuership.
