Minister Harps On AI To Tackle Insecurity In Schools

The Honorable Minister of State for Education, Hon. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, had emphasised that deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) will boost Nigeria’s technological capabilities in teaching and school security monitoring.

He spoke at the 2024 Information Technology Professionals’ Assembly, the eighteenth edition in the series with the theme “Artificial Intelligence: An Enabler for Economic Transformation and Sustainable Development,” in Abuja yesterday.

Sununu stated that “Deploying AI across our schools will assist us in teaching, monitoring, and ensuring the security of our schools.”

He noted the need for advanced technologies, including AI, to strengthen surveillance in school environments, stating that “We must apply technology, including AI, to establish robust tracking mechanisms and surveillance around our schools.”

The Minister also expressed confidence that the Assembly would produce findings and recommendations geared toward deploying advanced technologies through effective partnerships to promote economic, technological, and national security awareness.

“Furthermore, we recognize its potential to expand access to education at all levels,”he said .
The state minister said the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritizing the development, proper application, and deployment of Information Technology in the educational system.

“The Federal Government is committed to positioning Nigeria as a global leader, particularly in Africa.Information technology plays a crucial role in realizing this objective,”Sununu affirmed.

He urged professionals to align with the government’s vision to promote professionalism and contribute to the economy’s development.

In her keynote address, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Entrepreneurship Development in Innovation and Digital Economy emphasized AI’s potential to drive sustainable socio-economic development and accelerate prosperity through digital efficiency.

“We recognize AI as a technological revolution that will reshape various sectors, from education to healthcare, manufacturing, and beyond,” she stated.
